Where Can a Woodlawn Education Take You?

There are limitless possibilities—just ask our alumni.

Taylor Scott '16
Rice University '20
Major: Sports Management, Managerial Studies, Policy Studies

During Taylor's ten years on Woodlawn's campus, she's left quite a legacy. A four-sport varsity athlete, she was a member of Woodlawn's first girls state cross country and soccer championship teams as well as being a state-qualifying long jumper. She also took special interest in student publications at Woodlawn and was editor of the school newspaper. She's currently a junior at Rice University and is planning on going to law school after graduation. She says Woodlawn taught her to always set high goals for herself and to be constantly learning along the way.
Ariana Hoshino '16
Swarthmore College '20
Major: Film Studies and Computer Science

While a Trailblazer, Ariana could often be found behind the lens of her camera. She was a member of a Woodlawn student-produced Public Service Announcement on mental health that gained national recognition in 2014. Ariana, like many of our graduates, has adopted the "and, not or" philosophy— a belief that you do not have to limit yourself to just a STEM or just an Arts field. At Woodlawn she was allowed to integrate those two fields seamlessly and that has obviously carried over into her college career. Ariana was a member of Woodlawn's first varsity swim team as well as the photo editor for several years on The Mighty Oak, Woodlawn's yearbook.
Kathleen Elkins '10
Williams College '14
Reporter at CNBC

Kathleen is a member of our first graduating class at Woodlawn (2010). She is quick to point out to anyone who asks that at Woodlawn you are encouraged to "do you". After a successful four years at Williams College (with three national D-III tennis titles to her name), Kathleen started her career as a reporter. You can read her stories online at CNBC. When not filming on the streets of NYC, you'll likely find her running. She's already completed five marathons and is set to run the LA, Nashville, Berlin and NYC marathons next! Oh, did we mention? She's still the Woodlawn girls 5K record holder!
Terin Patel-Wilson '11
Yale University '15
Software Engineer at Google

After Terin graduated with a computer science degree from Yale University, he joined Google to work as a software engineer in San Francisco. He most recently moved to NYC to work with google.org and more directly with non-profit partners. Terin joined Woodlawn as a fourth grader and says that being allowed to be curious about learning is what he loved most about Woodlawn. In his senior year, Terin was named a National Achievement Scholar, an award given to the top 800 Black American high school students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Tori Rinker '12
Princeton University '16
Director of Marketing at PreData

Tori was a big contributor to the dramatic arts program at Woodlawn (she directed and produced a play) in addition to participating on the boys varsity golf team (the only girl in Woodlawn history to do so). On top of that, she found quite a bit of academic success - she was named a National AP Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar. But her biggest takeaways from her time at Woodlawn were the knowledge that she can continuously reinvent herself and the confidence to make it happen. As a result, she is now leading a marketing team for a New York City startup that provides geopolitical risk assessments!
Reilly Milburn '15
Haverford College '19
Major: Physics and Astronomy

Reilly (along with his three siblings) took full advantage of the opportunities that were provided by Woodlawn. One memorable moment occurred when he helped the boys cross country team earn Woodlawn's first state championship trophy. But he was especially passionate about the sciences and immediately gravitated to the Physics and Astronomy programs when he arrived at Haverford. He attributes his readiness to be successful in these fields to one of the hallmarks of the Woodlawn experience - its project-based curriculum.
Bella Jacoby '16
Dartmouth College '20
Major: Earth Science and Studio Art

Bella credits Woodlawn with helping her develop a love of lifelong learning. While a Trailblazer, she competed as a four-sport varsity athlete and earned recognition for her academic success (she was named a National Hispanic Scholar and a National Merit Finalist) and her talents as an artist. She continues to pursue her passions at Dartmouth, and her studies reflect the integrated, interdisciplinary approach to learning that Woodlawn has promoted since its founding.
Sawyer Bowman '11
Bowdoin College '15
Software Engineer at Uber Technologies

Sawyer works as an iOS software engineer at Uber in San Francisco. He has graduated from blistering trail runs around Woodlawn's campus to the fast-paced Silicon Valley work environment - and he credits Woodlawn with giving him strong collaborative skills. "I don't think a day went by at Woodlawn where we (the students) weren't working together around tables to solve problems instead of sitting in rows of desks. I learned to appreciate the different perspectives, and I quickly discovered that a lot of smart ideas are better than just one."
Sayre Weir '11
Middlebury College '15
Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Woodlawn School

Sayre, a long-time Trailblazer, joined our staff and faculty in 2016 after graduating from Middlebury College with a degree in Latin American Studies. With a passion for international travel and the Spanish language, and a real understanding of "The Woodlawn Way", it was an instant fit for our school community. In addition to teaching, she is also our Director of Development and Alumni Relations and she coaches the girls varsity soccer team, a team she helped build during her high school years.
Sydney Bowman '14
Occidental College '18
Fulbright Scholar in Madrid, Spain

Sydney's experiences as a Trailblazer ranged from serving as the Mighty Oak yearbook editor to setting school track records in the mile and half-mile. She says that Woodlawn helped her get comfortable with being uncomfortable. "We had to get in over our heads sometimes with material that was not easy to understand or seemed to be a contradiction to what we normally thought was true. We were encouraged to struggle with it for a little while. That idea and work ethic has really served me well."
